Easily jumping off the screen, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allows players to take control of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, freely switching between the two on the fly. More is definitely more in this case, as players follow individual storylines and take side missions, some exclusive to each character. Eight years later, Spider-Man takes on the villain Mister Negative, working to stop his plans to control New York City’s criminal underworld. Using Spider-Man’s ability to shoot webs and sling himself around New York, players follow Peter’s story while fighting villains along the way. Like the comics and film adaptations, Spider-Man takes on the responsibility of protecting New York City from the bad guys.

To make him even more deadly, Eddie became aware of Peter’s secret identity from the symbiote’s time bonded to Spider-Man, and he gained the ability to nullify Spider-Man’s heightened senses. After Peter is gravely wounded, Harry allows the symbiote to bond with his friend to save his life, only for the symbiote to negatively affect Peter’s personality. After a series of catastrophic events, Miles has to battle Peter to remove the symbiote from Peter’s body. Miles initially helps rid Peter of the symbiote while Harry seeks to get it back. The symbiote re-bonds to Harry, who is resentful that Peter initially kept the symbiote to himself due to its malevolent influence on him. Upon re-bonding with Harry, the symbiote transforms Harry into the monstrous Venom, who then kills Kraven the Hunter and creates symbiote nests around the city.

Here, though, he’s not that serial killer the alien eyes in jail. This time, he works at an amusement park, eager to redeem himself. Unfortunately, Kraven’s goons kidnap him, leading to an action-packed car chase across the Big Apple. Lizard creates one of the game’s best chases as the hunters and Spider-Men try to nab him across NYC’s waterways. Thankfully, Peter and Miles get to him first, beat him down, and cure him. Connors, after all, is the key to studying the symbiote and helping ensure it doesn’t fully possess Peter.

However, the plot is structured in a way that gives focus to other villains and storylines at the same time. Like Batman having to save Mr. Freeze from The Penguin so he can make a cure for Joker. There’s a way to balance your stories, and Insomniac has yet to do it.

This Spider-Man game, however, will follow PlayStation’s divisive trend of requiring a PlayStation Network account if you want to play it. Throughout the turbulence caused by the Insomniac data breach, Sony made a significant round of layoffs affecting around 900 staff, or about 8% of its global PlayStation workforce. Insomniac was one of a number of PlayStation studios hit by the cuts.

If you still need any combat-related trophies try to pair them up with Collectibles, many of them feature enemies. Getting bronze medals in the Mysterium Challenges is enough for trophy purposes, no need to get silver or gold. All Collectibles get marked when unfogging the map, except Spider-Bots which are unmarked. Once you reach district completion level 2 it fully unfogs the map.

Meanwhile, Insomniac refines a successful formula of combat and web-swinging without revolutionising either in major ways, making them comfy and familiar with just enough new tweaks and abilities to elevate them to fun new heights. The part that feels like it actually needed a radical rethinking is the open world of New York City, which has been made bigger but not better, with an exhausting checklist of mostly repetitious side activities. But it’s safe to call this another thrilling Spider-Man adventure that delivers Insomniac’s best tale yet, and despite its open world falling short, it’s a reliably fun superhero power trip. [newline]You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent. Avoiding spoilers, the basic premise revolves around Kraven the Hunter, who is, well, craving a hunt. For those uninitiated in the character, he’s essentially The Predator, an Apex hunter blessed with super strength who has chosen New York as his next hunting ground.

There are a few cool explorable locations like the Emily-May Foundation and Coney Island, but the rest is just a blob of boring buildings. Venom isn’t around long enough either, especially for the impact they act like he had on the city, but it just about made all the waiting worth it. Especially with the added personal connection between Spider-Man and Venom, really highlighting Venom as the dark mirror of Peter. It takes a very long time for Venom to show up, some would say too long, but he steals the show the second he does.

At the end of the game’s second act, Peter saves Miles from Kraven before the two Spider-Men face off, as Miles tries to get Peter to give up the Symbiote. Miles defeats Peter and captures the Symbiote before the two of them bring the alien suit back to the destroyed rubble of the April May foundation. This fight concludes the game’s second act and sets up a tense final act, as Peter and Harry are set to face off as enemies.

With users able to pre-download the digital game prior to its release, they will be able to play the game as soon as it’s available for play in the PlayStation store.
