When Lizard is on the loose in NYC, Miles and Peter must chase it down and keep up the pursuit. Eventually, another phase will begin where you’re webbed onto him and have to dodge away from falling debris as you tail him up the side of a building. After a cutscene, you’ll face Lizard in his natural element – the sewers – where you’ll have to deplete his HP by wailing on him with your Spidey powers. While the world tries to keep Spider-Man down with a veritable feast of villainous bosses in Spider-Man 2, the combined effort of Peter and Miles – two Spider-Men working together – is more than enough to face down the odds.

We join Miles at this exact point in his life, with family ties straining, friendships facing fresh challenges, and life decisions of genuine importance being posed for the first time. Actor Nadji Jeter displays all the range needed for the role, continuing to excel as a younger Spider-Man maturing before our eyes. He’s in his early twenties so has already navigated the difficult years that Miles finds himself in, but thanks to the symbiote suit, he’s working his way through yet more bodily changes. Spider-Man 2 (PS5) brings back some of the old suits from the previous two games including news suits and outfits for this sequel from vintage suits to what-if scenario costumes.
In the ensuing action, the two free Harry of the symbiote but it also looks like Harry is not long for this world. Peter is one of the funniest characters in the Marvel universe because he always has a good quip. Sometimes his comedy borderlines on dad jokes that are so bad, one can’t help but laugh at the awkwardness. A great example can be seen in the mission “Stay Positive” wherein Kraven’s men invade the research foundation. The best suits for Peter in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 celebrate the many different versions of the character and some of his most iconic movie moments.

Peter now has metallic claw-like arms, but their effectiveness is lower than Morales’ abilities. Peter’s combat system changes with the appearance of the symbiote, adding spectacular and dangerous abilities. Eventually, Peter and Miles team up to take Venom down, but Harry is left in a coma as the symbiote is finally destroyed. This leads to two crucial scenes that will lead into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, as Norman Osborn blames Peter for Harry’s situation and meets up with Dr. Otto Octavius to plan how to defeat him. Overall, the game is a phenomenal experience, and its 32 missions are all rich and full of content.
Traversal too, is more of the same, but that’s hard to knock when swinging around the city as Spider-Man feels this damned good. Although the game’s map is now expanded beyond Manhattan isle to include truncated facsimiles of the outer boroughs (WTF is “Downtown Queens?”), zipping around at breakneck speed is more exhilarating than ever. Utilizing the PS5’s internal solid-state drive, players can seamlessly fast travel at the touch of the map once they’ve spent enough time in each neighborhood. And although it means the loss of the endlessly entertaining sequences of a masked up Spidey taking the subway, it shows once again that Insomniac are one of the few developers capable of showing off the flashy speeds of an SSD.

It takes a very long time for Venom to show up, some would say too long, but he steals the show the second he does. Everything he does is intimidating, and you feel the power behind every movement. Thanks in no small part to the fact that you get to play as him for a stretch. Very few of the alternate color schemes look better than the default, though.
